Diary Entry #1
1937, July 2nd

As I woke up in the morning, I had a dream of meeting a young little Korean boy that I had met when I was young. My father and I would often give out chocolate to the poor Korean boys, especially this lonely boy constantly reading books about American pilots. (James Park) This was the moment that I had decided to become a pilot.

Today is a special day, the day I finally graduate from High School at North Quincy (Massachusetts). I've submitted my application to Boston University, one of the largest universities within Massachusetts, and Purdue University, somewhat of a military school for people like me. The only reason why I decided to attend at a military school was due to the fact that my father had died within the U.S gunboat Panay, which had been shot down by the Japanese near the Yangzi River in China. The Japs have finally decided to come out into the outer world, as they begin to dominate the Chinese.

Ever since I was young, my father would teach me how to become brave. He himself, was the bravest man that I had ever met, even until today. He never knew when to give up, and never wished to risk someone’s life, as he stood in front of others. He was promoted to a general few weeks ago, unfortunately he has left my mother and myself behind.

My mother and I are the only members left within the house, and there is no source of income. We have been starving ever since we heard the news. Our house hold is coming apart, and there is nothing that I can do to prevent it. I wish to take revenge upon those Japs, as I’m always ready to fight against them, as I have dedicated my whole entire life to my nation. One day I shall become the hero of America, saving thousands of lives upon the world, just like my father.

I have also heard some recent news about Amelia Earhart, the first woman to circumnavigate the world along the equator. She has become somewhat of an idol to me, as I also wish to fly across the world. Today, she successfully completed her 22,000 mile journey, and soon my turn shall come. Every once in a while, I would gaze upon the sky, as the various navy planes swoosh through the sky. Within a matter of months, I shall also become a part of the sky.

Diary Entry #2
December 8, 1941

I have graduated university, and finally obtained my chance to participate within the U.S Army Air Crops. As soon as I was chosen, I was sent to a nearby harbor at Hawaii, known as Pearl Harbor. It is one of the largest harbors within America, and there are numerous amount of ships docked within this harbor. It seemed to be the best day of my life, as me and my mother exciting went to the docks. Only until the Japs roared in.

Everything was peace and silent just like every other day, but there was a sudden rumble. The Japs have dared America to fight against them, which means it is time for war. The hundreds of bombers raged through the skies in the morning, but I was lucky enough to survive through the fight. All the ships that I can imagine, have been sunk. Not only did they kill my dear friends, they have killed my mother, who was sleeping within the civilian shelter. She was the only family member that I had left, and now she is gone. It’s not the Japs who declared war among the U.S., nor is it the U.S. who declared war among Japan, it is me, Charles W. Sweeney, who declares war against all those who are Japanese.

My dear co-worker, Albert Wilson (Jungwook), talked about how outrageous the situation was at Pearl Harbor, as the unexpected bombing brought upon devastating results. It just ain’t fair, since we were the ones who provided Japan with fair trade. It should be us, the U.S, who should be complaining against them. The world seems to filled with chaos, and no longer is our nation safe from the rest of the world. Soldiers like me have to stand up against our foes, and I shall become the greatest pilot on earth. The Japs maybe able to take over China, but they won’t be able to take over the U.S. unless they take me down first.

As soon as the Japs began to fall back, I was finally assigned to take action within a aircraft. It was my time to say good bye to Albert, as I handed him my lucky cross. All I could say was, “Bring it back.”, as I began my long journey toward Japan. I’m not sure if I’ll come back alive, and continue on this diary, but this is the only thing that I can do, to save my country and people.

Diary Entry #3
August 9th, 1945

The rumbling of the cockpit, the roaring of the engines, as my copilot, Charles Donald Albury, and I took off the runway located at Tinian. (Gene Lee) Our plane, a B-29 unit, also known as “Bockscar”, the mighty bomber of America, flew off to our primary target, Kokura. I could hear the massive propeller constantly rotating against the wings, as we finally took position among the other bombers, “The Great Artiste” and “The Big Stink”. I was chosen as the commander of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, so it was my duty to take control of my men within the plane.

It is finally my chance to take revenge among Japan, as our plane is loaded with bombs, including the mother of all bombs, the “Fat Man”. This nuclear weapon is also known as one of the most devastating bombs existing on earth, and it is controlled within my hands. With a click of a button, I would be able to kill thousands of lives, and force Japan to surrender against America.

Unfortunately, our plane had a faulty fuel transfer pump, making it impossible to utilize 625 gallons of fuel to proceed with the mission. Not only were we short by at least forty-five minutes of flying time, we were also limited to fifteen minutes of preparation time before bombing on the target. As soon as we arrived upon our destination, 7/10th of the target was filled with clouds, limiting our sight. Bockscar took at least three bomb runs, yet still not able to take a clear vision of the target, we had no choice but to turn toward ours secondary target, Nagasaki.

There was a dense amount of clouds above Nagasaki, as the plane went up to an altitude of about 30,000 feet. The button was pressed, the “Fat Man” was launched, and all we had to do was wait for the show to begin. There was a sudden flash of light, and there went the humongous mushroom cloud. Due to the fact that we were short of fuel, we made an emergency landing at Okinawa. Two of the engines had already died due to fuel starvation, and I had finally accomplished my mission as a general.

Diary Entry #4
June 28, 1946

It has been a year since I bombed the Japanese, and things have changed ever since the bombing. A month later, after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan had finally surrendered, thanks to my help. Things seemed to go well after I accomplished my mission, even thought I left my active duty with the rank of a colonel. I have now moved back to the states, where my new family and I would live. I’m currently active with the Massachusetts Air National Guard, where I might be promoted as a general.

This might be my last diary before I spend the rest of my time with my children, and my wife Dorothy W. Sweeney. However, I would like to write down a few thoughts and hesitations that I had made during my mission of bombing Nagasaki, as it wasn’t an easy task to manage. Thousands of lives depended within my hands, as there were civilians who did no harm to America. I was ordered to drop the bomb, yet I didn’t have a clue rather if this was the right thing to do. Of course I the trail of victory, but Japan had sacrificed innocent lives.

On my way toward flying to Singapore, for an emergency rescue mission to pick up Dillan McGuire, an American pilot, I took a short glance at Japan. (James Huh) The whole territory was demolished, as the building remained ruined. Maybe that’s why I retired from the U.S army, or perhaps I don’t have the guts to kill more people.

What would have happened if I didn’t bomb Japan? Would have America defeated Japan, or would we have lost? I still regret for what I have done, and if I were asked to bomb another country, I would refuse to do so. It’s not easy making instant decisions rather to kill thousands of lives or not, especially when your nation depends on you. If I were to have kept the bomb, and retreated back to America, how would the people view me? Would I look like a hero, or just a idiotic fool. Things seem to change at a rapid rate. There is no more glory in killing thousands of lives, and saving your nation. I just don’t get the point of it.
